Standard Oil
The company which was led by John D. Rockefeller had accumulated a colossal monopoly in the U.S. till the early 20th century. In 1904 it was calculated that Standard Oil controlled almost 91 percent of oil production in the United States. This monopoly was exposed by the journalists and the company was sued by the U.S. Department of Justice in 1911 for violating an American antitrust act. In 1911, the Supreme Court divided Standard Oil into 34 separate entities, like Exxon, Mobil and Chevron.
