The Law: The country will block any site by deeming it to an immoral status. The number of blocked websites from 2008 had already exceeded five million. It includes popular websites like Facebook and YouTube.
Most interesting part of Iran’s internet law is yet to come. It reads like this: If a person wants to get access to the internet through any service provider, he will have to make a promise to the government which needs in writing, that they won’t access “non-Islamic” sites. Moreover, the households are permitted to have a maximum download speed of 128 Kbps and for the commercial firms, it’s restricted to 2Mbps.
Penalties: Punishment for breaking the laws includes heavy fines and imprisonment up to 15 years. Depending on the case, it can even result in death penalties. In 2008, Hossein Derakhshan, the Iranian blogger who is credited with starting of blogging revolution in Iran was arrested without a cause. He was sentenced to 20 years in jail on 2010.
