Ultrasound is an oscillating sound pressure wave with a frequency greater than the upper limit of the human hearing range.Ultrasound is used in many different fields. Ultrasonic devices are used to detect objects and measure distances. Ultrasonic imaging (sonography) is used in both veterinary medicine and human medicine. In the nondestructive testing of products and structures, ultrasound is used to detect invisible flaws. Obstetrician Ian Donald and engineer Tom Brown developed the first prototype of medical ultrasonography in 1956 in Glasgow.

#2 Carbon Fiber

Carbon-fiber is an extremely strong and light fiber-reinforced polymer which contains carbon fibers. Although carbon fiber can be relatively expensive, it has many applications in aerospace and automotive fields, such as Formula One. Improved manufacturing techniques are reducing the costs and time to manufacture, making it increasingly common in small consumer goods as well, such as certain ThinkPads since the 600 series, tripods, fishing rods, helmets and others.

In 1958, Dr. Roger Bacon invented the first high-performance carbon fibers at the Union Carbide Parma Technical Center, located outside of Cleveland, Ohio.
