#5 Automatic doors

Year: 1954

The automatic doors which work on sensors eliminate the need for a person to open or close a door by turning a doorknob or pressing up against a bar on the door itself. They are most commonly found at the entrance and exits of supermarkets, air terminals and other such places. In 1954, Dee Horton and Lew Hewitt co-invented the automatic sliding door. They commercialised it through Horton Automatics.

This non-volatile storage device which stores digitally encoded data on rapidly rotating platters with magnetic surfaces is yet used in most of our desk tops and laptops. The hard disk drive was invented by Reynold Johnson and commercially introduced in 1956 with the IBM 305 RAMAC computer.
