Canada gives Rs 12M for rural development projects

NEW DELHI: Canada will provide 12 million as a grant for projects to empower women and alleviate rural poverty in India. The projects will be implemented by NGOs approved by Canadian High Commissioner Peter Sutherland, according to a statement issued by the Canadian High Commission here Thursday. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) will provide grants totalling 3.7 million (Cdn $124,884) to three NGOs to support projects to empower women. These NGOs are Gram Niyojan Kendra, Manav Seva Sansthan and Gopal Kiran Shiksha Avam Sanskritik. They will use the funds for "capacity building of rural women in management of micro enterprises", the statement said. Gram Niyojan Kendra will receive Cdn $49,200 to aid women entrepreneurs in Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh to form a federation for sustainable enterprise planning, production, marketing and links with banks. To introduce and promote soya cow machine technology among women in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, Manav Seva Sansthan will receive a grant of Cdn $49,126. The Gopal Kiran Shiksha Avam Sanskritik of Gwalior will receive Cdn $26,558 to train women's groups on technical issues related to crop production, water harvesting and credit management. CIDA, through its "Canada Fund for Local Initiatives", has been contributing to various sustainable socio-economic development programmes in India through indigenous organisations. Sutherland has also approved the grant of 8.3 million (Cdn $277,409) to six NGOs to support programmes on rural poverty alleviation. These organisations are Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Shramik Bharti, Self-Reliant Initiatives through Joint Action (SRIJAN), International Development Enterprises India (IDEI), Institute of Regional Analysis (IRA) and Sarguja Gramin Vikas Sansthan. CFTRI will receive Cdn $50,000 to train tribal farmers in adopting appropriate scientific technologies for setting up agro-food industries to achieve food security in Chamarajnagar district of Karnataka. Shramik Bharti will get a grant of Cdn $34,876 to introduce and promote rearing of 'eri' worms on castor leaves for production of silk among poor farmers of Kanpur Dehat region in Uttar Pradesh. Small farmers from Bundelkhand district in Madhya Pradesh will benefit from a grant of Cdn $49,967 to SRIJAN to promote community management of 'chandela taals' or traditional water ponds, and for seeking government recognition of Taal user groups. A grant of Cdn $49,897 to IDEI will be used to develop micro-irrigation kits to facilitate the growth of high value cash crops by small farmers from Garhwal, Nainital and Almora districts of Uttaranchal. IRA will get Cdn $47,380 to improve agricultural production through watershed management in Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh, while Sarguja Gramin Vikas Sansthan will receive Cdn $45,199 to spread awareness of water conservation and sustainable agricultural activities among tribal communities in Sarguja district in Chattisgarh.
