  • BBMP to issue notices to 3.75 lakh property tax defaulters who owe Rs 700-800 crore.
  • Over 50,000 new khata applications to be fast-tracked to boost revenue.
  • Online A-Khata application system to launch in 15 days for easier access and compliance.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has intensified its efforts to recover pending property taxes, with Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao directing officials to issue notices to approximately 3.75 lakh defaulting property owners. These defaulters collectively owe the civic body between Rs 700-800 crore in unpaid taxes.

In a review meeting held on July 28, Rao emphasized that property tax collection remains a top priority for the civic agency. Notices will be sent via SMS and email to defaulters, while those who have already paid need not be concerned. “Those with outstanding dues should take immediate steps to settle them”, Rao said.

To improve revenue generation, the BBMP is also expediting the processing of more than 50,000 pending applications for new khatas. Rao instructed officials to treat these applications as a priority, citing that timely issuance of khatas could significantly enhance property tax inflow.

Additionally, BBMP plans to launch an online system for A-Khata applications within the next 15 days. The digital platform will allow citizens to apply for conversion from B-Khata to A-Khata or submit fresh applications if they currently lack a khata document.

A-Khata is a crucial legal document for property owners in Karnataka, required for availing building approvals, loans, and ensuring full legal ownership. In contrast, B-Khata properties, which often fall under irregular or revenue layouts, face restrictions in civic services and legal transactions.

With these initiatives, BBMP aims to streamline property documentation and bolster its tax collection framework, ensuring greater compliance and improved civic infrastructure funding.
