The new pre-fabricated technique of construction is not an uncommon term in Indian construction glossary. As pre-fabricated materials like wall panels, plasterboards, ceiling panels, flooring as well as interiors are included to build hospitals, offices and commercial buildings.

V Subramanian, MD, Saint-Gobain Gyproc India, which is the manufacturer of prefab construction materials, cited that "Prefab panels and boards are eight-ten times lighter than brick-and-mortar walls. This reduces the load on the structure, which lowers the building cost."

Pre-fabricated construction technique will soon gain the popularity and acceptance in India, which is a common technique in developed countries.

James Timberlake, partner, KieranTimberlake, a U.S-based architecture firm which is developing affordable pre-fabricated houses in India cited that "The use of pre-fabricated materials and methods is on the rise in the US as the construction industry has begun to adapt to changing market conditions, new materials and methodologies. Within India, one of the greatest obstacles is within the construction industry-the long periods for which projects are stuck, with delays in the supply chain. Off-site fabrication can reduce delays, free up the supply chain and help projects move ahead more rapidly," reports Business Today.
