The construction of this lavish building started during the British era and took 17 years to complete; even though it was scheduled to be completed in 4 years and on the eighteenth year, India became independent.

To establish their colonial trail in India, the British had decided to construct a palatial mansion for their Viceroy in New Delhi, named as ‘Viceroy’s House’. However, this magnificent building was renamed as Rashtrapati Bhavan during the period of Dr Rajendra Prasad, when he became the first President of India, on 26 January 1950.
