Bengaluru, an established hub of the IT industry and technical organizations, is India’s very own Silicon Valley. The career opportunities afforded by this metro city have attracted millions of people from all over the world since the 90s. No wonder, renting a home in Bengaluru has become a daunting task.

If you are looking for a good rental property in Bengaluru of India, here are a few tips:

Prepare a budget – This is probably the most important decision you need to make. Firstly, decide on how much you are ready to pay and stick to the figure as much as possible. Making a sensible budget for rent will save you from being pulled into paying more than you can or need to.

Be clear about your requirement – Consider things like location and neighborhood. Would you like the place to be closer to your college or place of employment? Do you want to live in the heart of the city with its happening night life or somewhere a little quieter

Hunt for the dream place – Once you have your priorities in order, start looking.

-        The Internet is an excellent place to start. Look out on MagicBricks to rent a house in Bengaluru.

-        Also, look out on social media, many people post their properties on Facebook groups and other social media sites. It certainly makes home hunting easier for you. Similarly, you can also post your requirement online.

-        Don’t forget to scan through local newspapers which carry dozens of ads for rental properties and ask your friends or colleagues too.

View the property – Now that you have shortlisted a few places, it is time to check them out. Online photos and owner descriptions can often be incorrect and misleading.

-        Take a good look at the building structure and the condition of the elevator.

-        Check out the nooks and corners of the house, bathroom taps and ceilings for dampness, leakage, etc.

-        Are the rooms big and spacious or are they as you were promised?

-        Check out the neighborhood as well; is it friendly and safe?

-        Is public transportation easily available?

-        If you own a car, find out if there is a parking space in the building premise and if not, is there a convenient and free parking space on the street.

Go into details - Ask as many questions as you wish to about the property. After all, you shouldn’t have regrets later.

-        Find out through the landlord or the agent whether there is a 24/7 water supply, how often the area experiences a load shed or is the domestic help readily available?

-        Talk to the neighbours. People staying in the building can provide you the best feedback about the property.

-        Do not forget to discuss any restrictions the owner might have, regarding pets, hanging pictures on the walls using nails, or hosting parties and bringing women friends home.

Finalize the deal – If you are content with the look and feel of the place, and are satisfied with the information, it’s time to enter the rental agreement. A few things that you will come across are:

-        Paying a fee to the agent or broker, if you have availed of their services.

-        Paying a security deposit to the landlord, usually the rent for three to six months.

-        Some landlords might perform a background check on you.

If everything seems in place, go ahead and sign on the dotted line and shake hands. Congratulations on your new pad!

Some final quick tips:

  • Women, especially working women can find a women’s hostel more comfortable and safer, but find out about the timings and other restrictions.
  • Don’t show too much interest, this way you can also try to negotiate a better price. Take your time before making the final decision. But if you find a great place, move fast. Good places to stay are few and far in between and are scooped up within hours if not minutes.
