Could you tell us briefly about your family background?
I come from a middle class background.I am the third child of 6 siblings. I have 2 brothers and 3 sisters. My wife (MA, B Ed.) worked briefly as a teacher but mostly been a homemaker. My first son is a pharmaceutical scientist in USA and second son is a senior Manager with KPMG USA.
Role Model
There are many role models for me. Dr. Lillian Gilbreth is one; Queen Elizabeth II, Harry Truman,Winston Churchill, Douglas MacArthur, Sambhaji Rao Bhonsle,Rama, Hanuman and Raja Yudhister are my role models. They are great human beings and I had drawn a lot of inspiration from them.
Plans for the Future
I see myself a better human being little more mature and wiser.
Essential Advice
QA is not policing or detective work. QA is preventing the defect. Master the QA tools to ensure that the defects are not injected into the product. Equip yourself with the knowledge of statistics and analytical skills to be effective in the profession. QA is a great profession bring pride to it.
Currently working at
I am a consultant to organizations in QA area including the process definition and its continuous improvement as well as software project management, and training in the IT field and management field. I had also developed software products for software development and manufacturing organizations.
Required Reading
My book Mastering Software Quality Assurance: Best Practices, Tools and Techniques is the one I recommend. It is available from many book stores and web sites including infibeam, flipkart and rediffbooks. There are many web sites promoting QA and all of them are good.
Current and Previous Responsibilities
My role had been the same for the last decade.
Degrees that Matter
Certifications do not make a person a QA professional. One needs to have a basic degree in engineering and should have the aptitude for QA. I suggest taking courses on testing tools and process improvement training to make you a well rounded QA professional.
Parting thoughts
We have a shortage of good QA people. This is a wonderful profession. I encourage young people to take up this profession.
Changes in the industry
In the early days the programmer was the tester. There was no process to follow or improve. No test plans to conform to. Now the methodology is well developed. Now IV & V has grown into an independent profession. QA has been growing in importance in the last decade and the it is likely to continue.
A Fine Balance:
Week days are for work and weekends are for personal life. The life is short and we work to live and not live to work. We need to remember this principle to balance work and life. I do follow it.
Areas for the Future
Automated testing will be the focus area for some more time to continue. Ensuring 100% testing (which is not possible presently) is the objective most organizations would try to achieve.
Tech trends to watch out for
The testing tools are going to develop further and learning effective test scripting would be a sine-qua-non for career development. If we cannot script a testing tool, we will not have a testing career tomorrow.
Points of inflection
The profession progressed from self-testing of software to independent testing and then to QA has been the major development. My career also changed from in-house development to development for the clients. From no methodology to full methodology was another important development.
Most Important Lessons
Integrity is the most important aspect of one's character. Allegiance to the profession is more important than the allegiance to the boss or the organization. Lastly, the learning never ends - I was a student always, even today.
