Couple of years from now
I see myself as Point-to-Point architect for large and complex business problems. As technologist we assume that a good framework/platform will solve all business problems - seldom is the case.Understanding a business from consumers perspective is essential for a good framework.
Challenges
Nature of challenges changes with your role. Initially complex code used to give me excitement, later it was platform and now it is user experience. I would rate my stint at Dow Jones, New Jersey as most challenging where we built IDS ( Information Distribution System ) from scratch using new technologies and put into production. Also the role of Principal architect at Yahoo, Bangalore was quite challenging where we needed buy-ins from multiple stakeholders.
Trends to watch for
Traditional BI like Data Integration, Warehouse or Reporting has become commodity now. I expect warehouses will move to Big data and Analytic ( better insight using unstructured information ) will be order of the day. I am also keenly watching data quality space which will give confidence to corporate to trust their data.
Strongly recommend
-Big data Analytic-Free flow analysis and Text mining-Data Visualization-Distributed programming and Data Syndication

Important lesson learned
Growth is not about learning only technology. You must a team player and think long term. It is also important to align your interest with your work that will be stress buster. Ultimately it is your career and you have to take care of it.
