My job profile

I am currently working as Regional EHS Manager, L&T Water Effluent Treatment BU Chennai;

The scope of my tenure is EHS Management is Water Projects which comprises – “Water Distribution and Supply, Wastewater Treatment Plants, Industrial Large Water Systems”.

Currently running projects of our region are

-       Nemilli conveyance Main Project - Chennai

-       JBIC Water Supply Project – Kerala

-       CWSS Projects – Thirupatur, Vellore, Salem etc.,

+8 years’ experience in the field of HSE at different scopes of project such as Warehousing & Logistics, Onshore Seismic Oil & Gas exploration, Construction projects in Petrochemical, Refinery, and Gas plants.

My role is to plan, implement and monitor an effective EHS Management (Environment, Health and Safety) system in our organisation.

Leadership qualities

Everyone is a leader in one or other way, skill and style differs with the experience and environment they go through. We can’t say a leader is successful at all time he too has ups and downs. The lesson learnt grooms him to be successful.

First thing a leader should possess is a ‘Vision’ and converting it to his ‘Passion’ which will drive him the best out of him and success will follow.

Connecting right dots by avoiding mistakes

I just follow my intuitions.

I don’t think so we can avoid mistakes they are our learning experience but we can ensure it is not repeated.

Influenced by

The most influenced person is my Granny (Mother’s Mom). She being a young widower brought her 3 daughters and a Son to a position in the society without much support. She has only done her basic schooling but she reads lots of magazines (local language tamil) and I never saw her being idle. She was self and independent till her last. She was the best solid woman; I haven’t seen anyone better than her. My childhoods were with her and still I’m proud of her.

Handling grievances

Grievance of any employee can be dealt only when you know him better and You are approachable to him. Here many of the leaders lack as they don’t interact much with their employees. There should be some social level interactions and Get-together other than the work which will give more confidence to the employee.

Important career decision

Initially after my Engineering degree I lacked guidance, I was just a Medium student and more casual with my career. I had no much peculiar path to go about, I joined a small company and was just going by my life, until my situations forced to make myself better, hence I started jumping jobs, went abroad and now halfway stabilized myself. The most important career decision made by me is shifting my base mechanical engineering towards the Environment, Health & Safety as my profession.

My view on India technical development

It starts with our ‘priority’ and culture.

I recently saw some TV show in which one of the guest shared his experience in a school he visited; when He asked the students what they like to become in future Everyone said Doctors, Engineers, Scientists and so on but none said I will become an agriculturist and its true. The priority we inbuilt in our generations are ‘money’ and we stop them following their ‘passion’. During our childhood we would have been good in some sports, music and so on passions but we were restricted at one point of time mainly to get good grades in the Public exams we start pressuring them from their class 9th till they get enrolled in a Degree course. After such a pressure process the children lose their passions and start prioritising their focus on getting Degree, High Paid job, US Visa, Marriage and cycle goes on.

Even in Education system how many technical colleges prioritise in building a technically sound engineer? Once I was traveling in an auto rickshaw the auto driver shown me a clinic adjacent to the road and said never go to this Doctor. Once there was a child injured in the accident near the road and when the people took him to the doctor he refused to treat without fees. Why he lost his humanity on money? He might have spent lakhs of rupees to become a Doctor and he want to take it back with high profit. When schools, colleges have become Business centres and educations have become an investment to gain income for the future where you can find technical skills or the humanity?

The change should come from the Parents, the Media, Education system and the Government. I can see some change here and there but it will take another decade to lit up the passions. Once the passions gets lit up – the technical talent will be at its peek.

My family background

I am from native Coimbatore. Both my parents are Government Servants. My late father Mr. S. K Selvaraj was an Ex-service man and retired as Surveyor from Coimbatore collector office. He done his SSLC and joined army before his marriage. My mother Ms. Kamala Selvaraj is a Retired state highways employee. She is a BA Graduate. I have a younger sister Ms. Anantha Priyadharshini, She is a ME Graduate recently completed. Currently my marriage fixed with Ms. Dhivya a ME Graduate (not employed) from Tirunelveli on February 22, 2013.
