Changes In The Professional Environment:

It was tough intially in as much as the areas of my expertise are dominated by big four and advocates. However, with a little patience and perseverence things changed after one year.

Professional Strengths:

Company Law, Indirect Taxation, Criminal Law and Writ remedies.

Required Reading:

That will be discriminatory to some. I would only say to read books for enhancing knowledge, attitute and performance.

Working Life Management:

With the support of family and devoting some time for human rights and democratic issues of the country, writing stories, articles, composing poems etc.

Family Background

Father was employed with Tata Motors having a qualification from XISS, Ranchi. Sister is an ICMA and is practicing with me. My sister-in-law is a Company Secretary is also practicing with me. Brother employed with Tata Cummins, Jamshedpur.

Involvement in the Industry

Difficult to choose from. I would only say my practice with CLB and CESTAT.

Job Profile:

Practice Corporate Laws, Taxation - both Indirect - Excise, Service Tax & Customs and Direct, Fema, Writ remedies under those Acts, Criminal matters under those Acts etc. Appear as cousel at Company Law Board under 397 & 398 matters mainly on a regular basis. Also appear at CESTAT on a regular basis at Kolkata mainly. Occasionally at Delhi, too. Render consultancy services to corporates on all the above. Asssit my partners and juniors on the lesser work assigned to them like certification, apperance at Company Law Board, Regional Director etc. Consultancy on Accouts and Costing matters specially designing a cost system in an organisation, XBRL, MCA and other filing issues. Supervision of Mergers, Demergers, Restructuring & Liquidation matters in the High Court and BIFR etc

Other Thoughts:

I am a human rights activist. Compose poems, write stories. Have plans to write books on Company Law and taxation. Would like to write novels. Would like to work for the improvement of governance of our country.

Growth Strategy:

Networking, Serious about all invitations for presentation on issues relating to my profession for cliets, Institutes, social organisations etc. Updating continuouslly and expanding the areas of my practice etc.

Career Profile:

Have been general manager finance, group manager finance and legal earlier. Job responsibilities were monotonous relating to accounts, finance, legal, secretarial etc. Total time required for professional work was 1-2 hrs a day. Rest administrative responsibilities. Now responsible for overall functioning of my firm. Its marketing, goodwill, revenue, employment at two of my offices located at Kolkata and Jamshedpur apart from the consultancy.

The Journey So Far:

Worked for lessor known private and limited companies. However after starting my firm I have clients from Group companies of a well known Corporate Group to several other known companies at Kolkata, Dhanbad, Ranchi, Patna, Jamshedpur, Bengaluru, New Delhi and Mumbai.

Advice For New Professionals:

Have patience and perseverance. Increase your knowledge and skils. Wait for the opportunites. I would reccomend the young ones to start with lesser known companies rather than staightway jumping on big companies. Big companies may give better security but limit the professional growth right from the word go. One has to be very motivated and also have good networking and support from the top in order to excel and grow in job.

Role Model:

Mahatma Gandhi the only one. Without going into details I would say his autobiography tells all and that is the one book I would recommend straightway for all.

Done Differently:

Journalism and/or as Lawyer.

The Decisions That Matter

Adding another qualification of Company Secretary along with ACMA and LAW, starting my offices at Kolkata after Jamshedpur and then at Bengaluru (which is no more functioning in the absence of a suitable partner there). Started appearing at CESTAT and then at Company Law Board. Focussed mainly on Indirect Taxation and Company Law initially as they were not overcrowded as Direct Taxation. However, now take assignments relating to all legal issues pertaining to corporates.
