Could you tell us briefly about your family background?
I come from a middle class family. My father retired as Director, Andhra Pradesh Seed Certification Agency (Govt of AP), my mother retired as a school teacher and my wife is a career counsellor and holds an M.Phil degree in Political Science.
Degrees That Matter:
A PhD is now a must for teaching in Universities. One will also have to write a number of articles in peer reviewed journals for promotions once one enters into the University system.
Career Profile:
My current responsibilities include teaching which was there in my previous job as well. But I have now been made in charge of promoting and developing new courses which are interdisciplinary and also have been involved in a Govt of India programme which aims for rural development.
The Journey So Far:
I am not really in the Corporate World. I am Professor in the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Before that I was in the Osmania University.
Growth Strategy:
One does not become a leader by wanting to become one. The first pre-requisite for becoming a leader is having an open mind and the ability to listen to what others are saying. Then comes the ability to put all that you heard and your own thoughts together for creating strategies that solve problems
Changes In The Professional Environment:
In the academic environment there aren't any big changes. One significant change though is the growing emphasis on publishing in peer reviewed journals and promotions are linked to this and what is now being called contribution to corporate life in the university system.
Advice For New Professionals:
Don't be over confident, be respectful of seniors even if you disagree with them, but you must be politely firm when you think that they are wrong and you are right. Do not appear as a proud person with a negative attitude. That is very off putting. Be friendly and talk to as many people as possible.
Other Thoughts:
I notice that the younger generation of Indians are unnecessarily aggressive where they need not be. Indian cricketers sledging Australians works but a false sense of pride and entitlement to things will lead no one any where. Be humble but self confident. For that having domain knowledge is a must.
Done Differently:
I would change nothing. I have no regrets in life and am sure that I have got more than what I deserve.
Required Reading:
That is a question that cannot be answered with 300 characters as a limit. But books published by OUP, CUP and Sage publications usually are very good and they can be read. Also visit websites that give academic information by using various search engines. It need not be only Google.
Job Profile:
I am Professor.I teach students of under-graduate and post-graduate levels and I also supervise the research of M.Phil and PhD students.Apart from that I am also an adjudicator of dissertations and theses of students from other universities.I also contribute to new course & curriculum development.
Plans For The Future:
In the same profession but doing newer things as demanded by changing needs of society.
Prized Accomplishment(s):
I see myself as a student of life,I do not pay attention to the idea of accomplishment. The been there and done that attitude is what atrophies minds. For me being a university topper in my studies are significant landmarks but not accomplishments. Those who think they are accomplished stop growing.
Working Life Management:
My job does not require me to be busy all the time and therefore the Work-Life balance is not a problem for me.
