Indian-American Designated To Be Top Science Advisor for Biden

Dr. Aarti Prabhakar will be Biden's Chief Advisor for Science and Technology and a co-chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

FREMONT, CA: As part of his administration's goal to leverage science, technology, and innovation, US President Joe Biden selected Indian American Dr. Aarti Prabhakar as the next White House scientific adviser. Dr. Prabhakar will be Vice President Biden's Chief Advisor for Science and Technology, a co-chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, and a member of the President's Cabinet once confirmed by the Senate. President Biden announced his intention to nominate Dr. Arati Prabhakar to be Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), as well as Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, once approved. Dr. Prabhakar will serve as the President's Chief Advisor for Science and Technology, as well as a co-chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology and a member of the White House Cabinet, according to the White House. Dr. Prabhakar was acknowledged by Biden for being an outstanding engineer and applied physicist.

To extend American potential, overcome the most complicated challenges, and make the impossibly possible, President Biden declared that Indian Americans will head the Office of Science and Technology Policy. The President also concurred with Dr. Prabhakar that America has the most potent innovation machine in history. In addition, he expressed his gratitude to Dr. Alondra Nelson, who continues to oversee OSTP, and Dr. Francis Collins, who will remain as his interim Science Advisor while the Senate evaluates her candidacy.

Ms. Prabhakar was the first woman to manage the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) after being unanimously confirmed by the Senate to do so. Later, she held the position of director at DARPA, the organization responsible for the invention of ground-breaking innovations including stealth aircraft and the Internet. If approved, Ms. Prabhakar will join Vice President Kamala Harris and U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai as the third Asian American, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander in President Biden's Cabinet. The White House reports mentioned how the nomination becomes historic Ms. Prabhakar is the first woman, immigrant, or person of color to be named as a Senate-confirmed director of the OSTP.

To develop potent new solutions for important problems, Dr. Arati Prabhakar has led two separate federal R&D organizations and collaborated with startups, big businesses, universities, government labs, and nonprofits from a wide range of industries. She has substantial management and leadership experience and is a trained engineer and applied physicist. Ms. Prabhakar's family moved to the United States from India when she was three years old, first to Chicago and then to Lubbock, Texas, where she earned her electrical engineering degree from Texas Tech University. Aarti was the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in applied physics and an M.S. in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology. As a Congressional Fellow at the Office of Technology Assessment, she began her career in the legislative branch.

She is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and a former fellow at Stanford University's Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences.
