Bangalore: It is a fact that the U.S. consists of various segments of population but the fastest growing among them are the Hispanics and Asian Indians. Among the Asian Indians it is the Patels that have their name frequently occurring in the U.S. census, as reported by the Indiatimes.com. The U.S. census in 1990 had revealed 49, 470 Patels and the census in 2000 had in fact come up with over 1,45,066 Patels .

The census of 2000 had shown a total of 1.6 million Indian Americans. This reveals that the Patels had made up a tenth of the population in the United States. Most of these come from places like the United Kingdom and the East Africa but they all share an Indian ethnicity. One among every ten Indian American that you bump into in the United States is most likely to be a Patel.

The next come the Singhs with the population of 72,642, as per the 2000 census. This is another common name frequently found in the U.S. These too, come from not just India but various other parts of the world.

The census had also come up with a population of Khans with a total of 46,713,  Shahs, with a total of 37, 833and  Alis with a total of 36,079. At the same time there were various other Asian American Oriental Sounding names that had outranked the Patels. One among them is Lee, with a number of 60,6860 in the U.S. population, followed by Nguyen with a population of 3,10,125 and Kim with a population of 1,94,067.

All this proves that Asian American exist in a very large number in the U.S. population though they appear much smaller when it comes to the population of the Hispanics in the U.S. which come up to a much greater number with names like Garcia, Rodriguez, Hernandez, Lopez, Gonzales, each with a total population of 5,00,000.
