Bangalore: The Sikh community in Wisconsin has raised an amount of 1.4 crores for the families of  victims who died in the tragic shootout at Gurudwara on August 5.

"It's an outpouring of support. We are overwhelmed," said Dr Kulwant S Dhaliwal from Sikh Temple of Wisconsin.

Dhaliwal added that the target amount kept for the fundraising programme was USD 3,000, which they planned to raise in 90 days. But they were successful in raising 85 percent of the total amount in just 10 days.

Dhaliwal said that people all over America are contributing for the campaign and they are receiving donations from Punjab and cities in Britain and Canada. The amount will be given to the injured people and the families of the victims.

"It is an unexpected response," said Dhaliwal.

Apart from online fund raising, the campaign is getting funds from other sources as well.  Prakash Singh Badal, Chief Minister of Punjab has promised Rs 5 lakh each to the victims' families and Sacramento Sikh Temple in California said it has sent $ 11,000 to Wisconsin gurudwara.

"In this hour of grief, we thank the thousands of people around the globe who have offered their support and their prayers, and we encourage them to support those victims and families who are most in need.

Together, we must work to repair our community and finally address the epidemic of violence in America," said Amardeep Kaleka, the son of Satwant Singh Kaleka (who was killed in the attack) and founder of the online donation website, reports PTI.
