Bangalore: Aneesh Chopra, an Indian American who served as the chief technology officer (CTO) for the U.S. under the Obama administration will be contesting for the post of lieutenant governor in Virginia, next year.

‘Since I left my position as US chief technology officer, friends, neighbours, business and community leaders have encouraged me to take action by running for a statewide office,’ said Chopra in a statement. ‘I am humbled by their support and pleased to announce that after months of reflection, I enthusiastically filed my candidature for seeking the lieutenant governor post in 2013.’

Chopra was appointed as Secretary of technology by Tim Kaine in the year 2005 and later on in 2009 President Barack Obama selected him to the post of "Chief Technology Officer" for the White House.

‘In the days and months ahead, I look forward to continuing to listen to Virginians, hearing directly from them about the issues affecting their families and serving as an enthusiastic advocate on their behalf,’ the statement said, quoting him.

Chopra is presently working for the re-election of Obama and Kaine and he has raised more than half a million dollars for the U.S. general election in 2013.

Chopra received his BA from The Johns Hopkins University and his MPP from Harvard's Kennedy School.
