Bangalore: Many Indian American leaders are all praises for Obama’s recent announcement supporting gay marriages. The leaders from diverse categories belonging to different religion and political views say that they are pleased with the President’s positive stand on this serious issue.

On 9 May Obama passed the remarkable statement in an interview with ABC on television. "I've been going through an evolution on this issue. I've always been adamant that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally," Mr. Obama said in a television interview with ABC. "At a certain point I've just concluded that, for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married."

According to Harsha Mallajosyula, advocacy director of Trikone (a non-profit support organization for South Asian lesbian, gay and transgender people) this announcement is an accurate step towards the correct direction. He also made it clear that the news came as a big surprise and was unbelievable in the beginning.

Kamala Harris, the Attorney General of California stated, “I applaud the president's statement today supporting marriage equality; equality before the law is the founding principle of our nation.”

Several Hindu leaders also backed the President even though there were contradictory opinions regarding the authorization of same sex marriage in Hinduism.

Hindu American Foundation, Muslims for Progressive Values and Rajan Zed, president of Universal Society of Hinduism are few other organizations and individual who have declared full support for Obama on his comment.
