How 10 Iconic Tech Products Got Their Names

#2 Wikipedia

The term “Wikipedia” is coined by Larry Sanger, Wikipedia’s cofounder. The base comes from Hawaiian word ‘wiki’, which means ‘quick.’ Wiki is also a technology for creating collaborative websites. According to Sanger, Wikipedia is a portmanteau of ‘wiki’ (portmanteau is a way of taking two words, jam them together and create a new concept) and ‘Pedia,’ the traditional encyclopedia. However, the concept became a worldwide hit with billions of users visiting it every month.

#1 Google

Two interesting versions exist about the naming ceremony of World’s most popular search engine, Google.

First one is that Larry Page and Sergey Brin went for the name 'Googol,’ which meant 1 followed by 100 zeros. But when they submitted their project report to an investor, the he gave a cheque which was payable to ‘Google,’ and hence the name.

The second version is more interesting. As the co-founders searched for availability of the name ‘googol,’ their colleague mistakenly spelled the word as "google" and registered the website. Anyway Larry and Sergey liked the name and decided to go with it.
