Did Apple Truly See The Indian Opportunity?

Bangalore: Apple became the second largest Smartphone brand in terms of revenue, as it almost trebled its market share, coming second behind Samsung in the last quarter of 2012, according to the IDC report. But did Apple realize the true opportunity India had in store for the company? Apparently not.

With more than 900 million total mobile connections, India is the second largest mobile market in the world, coming next to China. Within the Smartphone segment, Apple's market share in last quarter was just 5 percent, according to the analyst group Canalys, meaning its overall penetration is tiny.

And Indian Smartphone market is to grow more than five times from about 19 million units last year to 108 million units in 2016, according to IDC, which really offers a big opportunity. The question which arises is, whether Apple’s strategy for India is enough by appointing two distributors, Ingram Micro and Redington; quick launch of iPhone 5, and billing of apps in local currency? Considering the Apple’s strategy in China, where its revenue grew 60 percent last quarter to $7.3 billion, and the current reign of Android mobiles in India, it however seems not enough.
