BANGALORE: April 8^th being the deadline for axing the support for Windows XP, more than 95 percent of the ATMs apparently are still using the same OS, which may increase the vulnerabilities of friendly cash machines. Hence RBI is said to be asking banks to upgrade to a newer platform soon.

Though the company is pulling the plugs on the windows XP, it would still continue to offer the security support to the product till 2015. However Microsoft also warns that even with the extended support the effectiveness of “out-of-service operating system is limited.”

"The probability of attacks on such a system may increase and it may be difficult to defend such attacks in the absence of Microsoft support," RBI said in a notification addressed to the banks,”RBI said in a notification issued to the Indian banks, reports PTI. "As some of your systems, including ATMs, may still be working on Windows XP, you are advised to take immediate steps to implement appropriate systems and controls in this regard," it added.
