India To Top U.S. In Internet Reach By 2014


Bangalore: Isn’t it exciting to know that the number of internet users in India is ten times the population of Australia? The internet is penetrating more and more in the rural parts, adding to the urban users, in the country, leaving 16 percent of India’s population as internet literate, reports Times Of India.

A report by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IMAI) says that nation has crossed the 200 million threshold in October and is expected to reach 243 million by June 2014, overtaking the U.S. as the world's second largest internet base after China.

The current statistics shows a 207 million internet user base in the U.S. while China has 300 million. Not all the users included in the 205 million figure at which India stands right now is active (those who use the internet at least once a month). "There is every reason to believe that they will turn into active users in the near future," says Nilotpal Chakravarti, associate vice-president, IAMAI.
