2 Crores Indians Prefer Smart Phones Over TV and Newspapers

Bangalore: The wave of Smart Phones has now started to outperform the traditional sources of entertainment like TVs and newspapers. An online audience and ad measurement platform ViziSense says that about 2 crore of the estimated 4.8 crore mobile Internet users in India have now devoted half of their newspaper and TV time to their mobile phones. They mostly use mobiles for entertainment, including news, travel and sports.

Moreover, 50 percent of mobile Internet users go online through their phones for more than 1 hour daily mostly to access email (99%) and spend time connecting with friends in social media (95%). Consumption of content is starting to shift in favour of the 2 new screens – Mobiles and Tablets.

The survey, which recorded responses from 2,024 users, further says that increasing popularity of mobile commerce is also a factor. About 80 percent of users use their devices for financial transactions such as paying bills, buying products or services and 28 percent of them having even used mobile money.

Amit Bhartiya, VP & GM - ViziSense says, “55 percent of all daily mobile Internet users hail from outside the top 8 metros. The survey establishes 2 major trends; the shift in screens is for real and that English print is migrating to mobile phones through WAP sites and applications, especially around lifestyle, travel and sports content.”
