10 Amazingly Popular Technologies Surviving Beyond 50 Years

#6 Microwave oven

Year: 1954

Percy Spencer invented the first microwave oven after World War II from radar technology developed during the war. Named the "Radarange", it was first sold in 1947. When the US-based company Raytheon newly introduced microwave ovens, they were sold for $2,000 - $3,000, which translates to $17,000 to $26,000 in the present time. It was almost 1.8 metres (5 ft 11 in) tall, weighed 340 kilograms. It consumed 3 kilowatts, about three times as much as today's microwave ovens, and was water-cooled.

An early commercial model introduced in 1954 consumed 1.6 kilowatts and sold for US$2,000 to US$3,000 which translates to $17,000 to $26,000 in today's dollars.

With time size, energy consumption and price shrunk and was only in the 1970s that it became a commercial success.
