Mukesh Ambani: A Man behind India's Digital Revolution

Internet was a dream for many few years ago.  A person who brought this dream to every doorstep at the most affordable price making India the cheapest data provider is Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani, Chairman & Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL). He is the first born of the renowned Indian business tycoon Dhirubhai Ambani, born on 19th April 1957 in Aden, Yemen. After graduating in Chemical Engineering from the Institute of Chemical Technology, Matunga, Mukesh enrolled into Stanford University, California to pursue his MBA. But his father Dhirubhai believed that real life lessons are much needed to escalate in life and it cannot be obtained from the classrooms. On his insistence, Mukesh chose to opt out of the College in 1980. Post which he joined his father to build the Reliance Industries; back then it was small but rapid growing textile enterprise.

In just a year, Mukesh’s passion and hard work lead to the expansion of the company across the sectors such as refining, petrochemical, retails & telecommunications industries turning the company into conglomerate. After the demise of his father, Mukesh and Anil Ambani (the Ambani brothers) parted ways, and Mukesh took charge of the ‘Reliance Industries’ while his brother took over ‘Reliance Communication Limited’. Mukesh with his intense business sense worked extensively in elevating the company, and as a result the Reliance Industries was listed among the Fortune 500 companies and also holds highest market value in the country. Later in 2008, through his company Reliance, he brought a cricket team ‘Mumbai Indians’ in the Indian Premier League.

Digital Revolution – How it all Began

His Kids complaint over poor internet connection in India in comparison with the US provoked the businessman in Mukesh to revive the telco industry in the country. As a result, in 2016 Jio was launched. This was the time which brought in digital revolution in India. Initially the service was offered for free for over six month. Through this business strategy, he acquired several subscribes and the network attained a reach in every nook and corner of the country. Making India the second largest data using country globally, in a very short duration, Jio become the one among the pioneer in 4G Network, leaving behind the telco giants such as Airtel, Vodafone, idea and more.

Awards and Honors

For his extraordinary contribution his business Mukesh has been honored with several awards. Few amongst them are Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Business Leader of the Year, Businessman of the Year, Global Leadership Award, Honorary Doctorate (Doctor of Science) and more.

 As the success tip, Mukesh states, “In the journey of an entrepreneur, the most important thing is self-belief and the ability to convert that belief into reality”.
