OpenAI Launches Learning Accelerator in India, Partners with IIT Madras

OpenAI has officially launched its Learning Accelerator program in India, aiming to transform how students and educators use AI in classrooms. The initiative includes a new $500,000 research partnership with IIT Madras to study how AI can improve learning outcomes and support innovative teaching, based on insights from cognitive neuroscience.

OpenAI also announced plans to distribute around 500,000 free ChatGPT licenses over the next six months. These will go to educators and students through partnerships with the Ministry of Education, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and ARISE. Training and support will be included to help schools make full use of the tools.

The company has focused on adapting ChatGPT to meet India’s unique education needs. A new ‘Study Mode’ is tailored for Indian curricula, including CBSE and IIT entrance preparation. OpenAI also aims to improve local language support and expand features for personalized learning.

Raghav Gupta has been appointed Head of Education for India and Asia Pacific. “We’re just getting started”, Gupta said. “The goal is to support teachers and students at every level urban and rural alike”.

He will lead efforts to work with schools, universities, and governments to integrate AI into teaching and learning processes.
