OpenAI Marks India Debut with Office Launch and Recruitment Drive
  • OpenAI will soon open its first corporate office in New Delhi, expanding its footprint in one of the world’s fastest growing tech markets.
  • The company has begun hiring to grow its local team and strengthen partnerships across government, business, and developer ecosystems.
  • India’s large tech talent pool and growing role in AI innovation and policy make it a strategic hub for OpenAI’s global ambitions.

OpenAI is making a significant push into the Indian market by setting up its first office in New Delhi and launching a hiring drive to build a strong local presence. This move signals the company’s intent to deepen engagement in a country with a booming digital economy and a vast base of technology professionals.

The AI firm, best known for its conversational chatbot ChatGPT, plans to bolster collaborations with the Indian government, private sector, and developer communities. Currently, the company operates with just one employee in India, Pragya Misra, who oversees public policy and partnerships. OpenAI’s expansion will support its collaboration with India’s $1.2 billion 'IndiaAI Mission', which focuses on developing indigenous language models and promoting responsible AI growth.

India has emerged as ChatGPT’s second largest user base, prompting the company to introduce a more affordable subscription plan priced under $5 per month to attract a wider audience. The launch of this pricing model complements its existing free and premium tiers.

The new office will help the company contribute to shaping AI regulations and policies at an early stage, reflecting India’s rising influence in the global AI landscape.
