Founders-as-CEOs: Did Zuckerberg Mess up Juggling Both?
After a few days, there was a rage of media companies calling Zuckerberg to step down. Reuters’ blogger John Abell wrote a post saying that Facebook needs a new CEO and that Zuckerberg might be a visionary, but that is not what Facebook needs now. To this, Pando Daily founder Sarah Lacy responded to Abell arguing he didn’t knew what he was talking about. She wrote that a founder CEO should never be fired even if that founder is doing a horrible job. Founder CEOs are always found to bring more success in the company.
Companies that didn’t do well with founder CEOs :
1. Yahoo: Jerry Yang was one of Yahoo’s co-founder and CEO. And he had even less success in turning Yahoo around than anyone else.
2. RIM: Jim Balsillie and Michael Lazaridis were the co-founders and co-CEOs at one time. Their commitment to a certain vision changed from a benefit to a gigantic flaw. Billions of dollars in market value destroyed almost overnight. The remaining of founder has caused more problems that it solves.
3. Twitter: The Company did massively well on market value after ousting the CEO co-founder Evan Williams.
