- Deepinder Goyal invests $20 Million in LAT Aerospace to build indigenous gas turbine engines in India.
- Startup to develop STOL aircraft with up to 24 seats for regional air connectivity.
- Engineer-led research team set up in Bengaluru with dedicated labs for hands-on propulsion development.
Zomato Co-founder Deepinder Goyal has announced the formation of a new aerospace startup, LAT Aerospace, aiming to build India’s first indigenous gas turbine engines. Goyal has invited engineers to join a specialised propulsion research team based in Bengaluru.
Teaming up with former Zomato COO Surobhi Das, Goyal is backing the startup with a personal investment of $20 million. LAT Aerospace is focused on designing low-cost, short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft with up to 24 seats, primarily to enhance regional air connectivity across India.
In a post on X, Goyal revealed that the startup will design lightweight, efficient, and flight-ready gas turbine engines from scratch. He emphasized that the initiative is entirely separate from his venture, Eternal. The research centre in Bengaluru will feature state-of-the-art labs for combustion, turbomachinery, thermal systems, and advanced materials.
Goyal highlighted the engineer-led nature of the project, stating, “No waiting around for approvals from ‘business’ people. No chasing slides or meetings”. LAT Aerospace is seeking professionals experienced in turbines, rotors, control systems, and related technologies.
With Das handling day-to-day operations as CEO, LAT Aerospace aims to revolutionize India’s aerospace sector by building core propulsion technology domestically, a milestone that could significantly boost India’s self-reliance in aviation.
