Bringing Back The Library Trend: Startups On An Unusual Mission
Leaping Windows
Inspired by the Japanese Manga cafes in Tokyo that offers the comic book aficionado a comfortable place to sit and read comic books along with something to sip and eat, Utsa Shome, Bidisha Basu and Koel Chatterjee came up with the idea of introducing a similar concept in India. Leaping Windows, a café-cum-library was first started in Versova, Mumbai in April 2012 and a year later its branch was setup at Indira Nagar, Bangalore.
This café-cum-library offers a six-month membership at
2,800 and an annual membership at
4,800. Customers can also just visit the library, order some delicious food and read interesting graphic novels for
30 an hour.
The three friends have spent nearly a third of the investment of Rs 25 lakh in the venture on books. “Most graphic novels cost north of Rs 500 and acquiring multiple volumes of a comic book series does not come cheap either. We try to stay away from popular comics and encourage out readers to read independent graphic novels that include the works on non-fiction and personal memoirs,” said Shome.
Leaping Windows now has nearly 400 active members and a collection of 4,000 titles.
