Entrepreneurial Tribute to India's Dairy Revolutionist
Bangalore: Dr. Verghese Kurien, who is popularly known as the milk man of India and also the ‘Father of White Revolution’ passed away on September 9, 2012 leaving behind wife Molly and daughter Nirmala. This great entrepreneur from India is the founding chairman of Amul, a company which is worth $2.5 billion, solely due to his hard efforts.
Early times
Dr. Kurien was born on November26, 1921 in Kozhikode, Kerala. He graduated from Loyola College in 1940 and later completed his engineering from Guindy College of Engineering, Chennai. He also has a master degree in metallurgical engineering with distinction from Michigan State University. He played an iconic role in the development of the country and created a revolution that was until then thought to be impossible, Operation flood.
How it all began
Kurien’s entrepreneurial career got a milestone mark with Operation Flood, a rural development program started by National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) of India in 1970 which had the objective to create a nationwide milk grid.
