Indian mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has finally got his first ODI call-up for the three-match series against England, which could finally see him going into India's final squad for the Champions Trophy to be hosted in Pakistan and Dubai. Confirming the selection of the 33-year-old spinner in the squad, India vice-captain Shubman Gill informed the media that he was added to the roster during a meeting in Nagpur on Tuesday.
Chakravarthy was observed training with India's ODI squad prior to the series. He was inducted based on a special request from the head coach Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir is of the view that including this leggie would strengthen the team for the bilateral series with England.
Chakravarthy’s recent performances have added weight to his selection. He was named ‘Player of the Series’ in India’s 4-1 T20I series victory over England, taking 14 wickets, including a remarkable five-wicket haul. Despite having played only 23 List A matches, Chakravarthy boasts an impressive record of 59 wickets at a strike rate of 19.8.
He has continued to excel in domestic cricket, particularly in the Vijay Hazare Trophy where he ended up as the highest wicket-taker among spinners with 18 wickets at an average of 12.16.
Currently, India's provisional Champions Trophy squad has four spinners: Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav. The Champions Trophy, starting from February 19, will see the participation of top teams such as India, Pakistan, New Zealand, Afghanistan, England, Australia, and South Africa. The tournament will be played across Pakistan and the UAE over 19 days.
