- RCB fans plan all-white tribute to Virat Kohli for May 17 match against KKR at Chinnaswamy Stadium.
- Tribute follows Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket announced on May 12 ahead of England tour.
- Fans urge attendees to wear white jerseys or plain white T-shirts as a symbol of Test whites.
In a heartfelt gesture to honour Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans are planning a unique tribute by donning all-white attire during their upcoming IPL 2025 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on May 17. The initiative, inspired by Kohli’s recent announcement of his retirement from Test cricket, aims to celebrate his contributions to the longest format of the game.
On May 12, Kohli made a surprise announcement, stating his decision to retire from Test cricket before India's tour of England. The news brought an end to a golden era of Indian cricket, and Kohli was well-known to be among the best Test captains and batters in contemporary history.
In respect for the legacy he leaves behind in red-ball cricket, RCB fans made a public appeal on social media, calling for fellow fans to show up at the stadium wearing white jerseys or simple white T-shirts. They chose the color white because it represents the whites of Test cricket which Kohli donned with pride in his entire career.
For the next RCB game, would you be able to help spread the word and get people to wear Test whites in the stadium as a tribute to Virat Kohli?" the fans' emotional message read. "He made so many of us fall in love with Test cricket. Even though I'll never get to see him play in whites live, I just want him to know how much he was loved in his favorite format.
The message also suggested giving plain white T-shirts to fans outside the stadium so that the tribute could be a colorful and inclusive visual.
Popular cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle noticed the campaign and tweeted encouragingly. "Hi @RCBTweets fans, are you guys going to show up in white for the match on the 17th? It will be amazing and a sight to behold if true and if you can make it happen", Bhogle tweeted on X (formerly Twitter).
He did note, however, a pragmatic issue. "Only risk is that selecting the ball in a white background will be extremely tough", he said, alluding to the eyesight test the players may endure throughout the game.
With RCB back on the field after the break, the next match is shaping up to be an unforgettable event both on and off the pitch.
