Paris Olympics: India's Prannoy Sets up Round of 16 Clash with Compatriot Lakshya Sen
In a scintillating turn of events at the Paris Olympics, seasoned shuttler HS Prannoy will be pitted against his compatriot Lakshya Sen in the men's singles Round of 16. Prannoy sealed his place in the knockout rounds by sweating out for a win against Vietnam's Le Duc Phat in his final group match.
The top-ranked Indian shuttler had to fight back to win, defeating Phat 16-21, 21-11, 21-12. There were far too many unforced errors in Prannoy's game as he lost the opening game. Phat caught up with an early lead to draw level at 8-8 and surged ahead to lead 12-10 before pocketing the first game 21-16.
He dug deep, and once again, Prannoy's resilience came to the fore in the second game. He quickly earned a first game 5-1 lead and kept building on it throughout to stay ahead. His dominance was clear as he clinched the second game 21-11 to restore parity in the match.
In this third and final game, both shuttlers put in a good fight for each point. While Prannoy could always stay a point or two ahead, Phat was never far behind. Finally, experience and class pulled Prannoy through to win 21-12 for a place in the pre-quarterfinals against Sen.
On reflection, Prannoy agreed that Phat had been posing a challenge. "It was a tough match, especially the first game where I made too many errors. But I'm glad I could bounce back and secure my place in the next round", he said.
This is going to be an exciting showdown; Prannoy is in brilliant form, and so is Sen. Sen, who is another rising star of Indian badminton, will provide a stern test for Prannoy. The match is an avidly waited contest by fans and is touted to be one of the highlighted tournaments.
