Captain Shubman Gill scored a brilliant 55-ball 90 as Gujarat Titans set a challenging 198/3 in their 20 overs against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on Monday.
On a slow pitch, GT scored 45 runs in the power-play, but increased their scoring after power-play. Gill and B Sai Sudharsan, who scored 52, shared a stunning 114-run opening partnership. Jos Buttler scored a rapid 41 not out off 23 balls, as he took advantage of KKR's fielding errors. But one would wonder if GT did not take much risks as they scored only 59 runs off the last five overs.
Set into bat first, GT took their time getting off to a slow start with Sudharsan shrewdly cutting and subsequently unleashing a stunning cover drive to hit two boundaries from Vaibhav Arora in the third over. Gill picked up the pace by slicing Harshit Rana for back-to-back fours, before welcoming Varun Chakaravarthy with yet another slice that yielded him yet another boundary as GT finished power-play at 46/0.
Then Gill raised his attacking game by dancing down the track and hitting Moeen Ali for six, and then flicking and sweeping for back-to-back fours. Gill and Sudharsan batted easily against Chakaravarthy, Sunil Narine and Harshit Rana. Gill got to his fifty from 34 balls and then Sudharsan got his fifty from 33 balls in the same over, as their opening stand passed hundred.
KKR's decision to recruit Andre Russell paid them an instant dividend as Sudharsan went for a cut off the short ball, but only succeeded in having a faint edge and provide regulation catch for wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the 13th over. Buttler made a flying start with five boundaries off his 12 deliveries off a pull, a drive over extra cover, a scoop over third man, a top-edge off reverse sweep and Arora spilling the catch off his drive at mid-off, as the ball ran away to the boundary.
Gill increased his strike-rate with tonking and pulling Chakaravarthy for two consecutive boundaries, followed by slog-sweeping Narine for six. He then pulled and cut Arora for six and four, and whipped straight to forward diving cow corner for 90. Though Rahul Tewatia holed out to deep cover off Rana, Buttler himself struck three boundaries in the final two overs, as 18 runs were scored off the last over.
Brief Scores: Gujarat Titans 198/3 in 20 overs (Shubman Gill 90, B Sai Sudharsan 52; Andre Russell 1-13, Vaibhav Arora 1-44) vs Kolkata Knight Riders
