Gujarat Titans (GT) delivered a clinical performance to defeat defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 39 runs in their Indian Premier League (IPL) clash at Eden Gardens on Monday, further strengthening their position at the top of the points table.
Opting to bowl first on a tacky surface, KKR were punished by a fluent Shubman Gill, who smashed 90 off 55 balls, laced with 10 boundaries and three sixes. He was ably supported by Sai Sudharsan, who continued his red-hot form with a 36-ball 52 his fifth half-century in six matches. Sudharsan also became the first player this season to surpass the 400-run mark, reclaiming the Orange Cap in the process. The pair powered GT to a commanding 198/3.
In reply, KKR's batting unit faltered yet again, managing only 159/8. Rashid Khan and Prasidh Krishna led the bowling attack with identical figures of 2/25, ensuring there was no late resurgence from the home side.
This marks KKR’s third defeat in four home games and their fifth overall in eight matches continuing a disappointing title defense. In contrast, Gujarat Titans notched up their sixth win from eight games, taking them to 12 points, two ahead of second-placed Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2025 standings.
