Indian Army Launches Girls Sports Company in Shooting, NRAI Applauds Initiative
In a commendable move, the Indian Army's Marksmanship Unit (AMU) at Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, has initiated a groundbreaking talent development program exclusively for young girls in the field of Shooting. The newly established Girls Sports Company aims to attract girls between the ages of 12-16 to enroll as shooters, offering them a platform to build careers as champion international shooters.
The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), the national governing body for the sport of Shooting, has praised the Indian Army's initiative. Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo, senior vice-president of NRAI, expressed his appreciation, highlighting that this initiative will particularly benefit girls from rural and economically weaker sections, providing them with an opportunity to pursue a career in sports. The NRAI has pledged complete support for this program, emphasizing the potential it holds for women empowerment and equal opportunities in the sporting arena.
The selection trials for the inaugural batch of the Girls Sports Company will take place from March 20 to 23 at the AMU, with online registrations open until March 10. Eligible candidates, girls who have passed fifth standard and are between the ages of 12 to 16 as of April 1, 2024, will have the chance to showcase their skills. Selected athletes will receive free education up to the Matriculation level, along with free boarding and lodging.
An additional noteworthy aspect of the initiative is the opportunity for selected girls to be enrolled in the Indian Army upon reaching 17.5 years of age, contingent on meeting recruitment standards and availability of vacancies according to the policy.
K Sultan Singh, the secretary-general of NRAI, commended the Indian Army's visionary effort, emphasizing the need for more government and corporate departments to follow suit in promoting an all-encompassing development of sports in the country. Singh acknowledged the government's supportive stance towards sports promotion and athletes, underscoring the Indian Army's role in fostering a robust sports culture for the nation. The initiative is expected to contribute to the continued legacy of the Indian Army in producing world-class marksmen, now with a focus on nurturing world-beating women shooters.
