Hosting seen as key step toward India’s 2036 Olympic ambitions
India is poised to be officially confirmed as the host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Commonwealth Sport set to approve the bid during its General Assembly in Glasgow on Wednesday. This decision will mark India’s return as host after the 2010 Games in New Delhi, and this time the event is headed to Ahmedabad, now one of the country’s fastest-developing sports hubs.
The approval is largely a formality, as the Commonwealth Sport Board had already recommended India’s bid following an evaluation of technical capabilities, athlete experience, infrastructure, governance and alignment with the organization’s values. India’s main competitor was Abuja, Nigeria, which is now being considered for the 2034 edition after a plan was created to support its long-term hosting readiness.
During the Assembly, India will present its vision for the Games in Ahmedabad, also referred to as Amdavad. A formal announcement is expected around 6:30 p.m. IST, with India represented by Sports Ministry joint secretary Kunal, IOA President P.T. Usha and Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi.
This decision will be a major milestone for the Commonwealth Sport Movement, which celebrates its 100 year history in 2030, and a significant moment for India as it works toward its larger goal of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games also proposed for Ahmedabad.
