India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a persistent back injury, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Tuesday. After weeks of uncertainty surrounding his fitness, the selectors named young pacer Harshit Rana as his replacement in the final 15-member squad. In another major change, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been dropped, with mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy taking his place.
Bumrah’s injury, sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, was initially expected to heal with five weeks of rest. However, despite undergoing rehabilitation, the 31-year-old pacer failed to regain full fitness in time for the marquee tournament. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed that Bumrah’s recovery had not progressed as expected, making his participation impossible. Harshit Rana, who made an impact in his recent ODI debut against England, has been included as a replacement after claiming four wickets in two matches.
In another surprising move, the selectors dropped Yashasvi Jaiswal, India’s highest run-scorer across all formats in 2024, in favor of experienced mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy. Chakaravarthy’s recent performances in the T20I series, where he claimed 14 wickets in five matches and was named ‘Player of the Series,’ played a key role in his selection. Jaiswal, despite his form, has played only one ODI, and the selectors appear to have prioritized experience over potential in the high-stakes tournament.
The BCCI has also named three non-traveling reserves: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mohammed Siraj, and Shivam Dube. These players will remain on standby and could be called up if required.
Final Squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2025:
Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Rishabh Pant (WK), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Varun Chakaravarthy.
Non-traveling reserves: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mohammed Siraj, Shivam Dube.
