President Murmu Heads to Mauritius for National Day Celebrations
In a significant development strengthening the diplomatic ties between India and Mauritius, President Droupadi Murmu embarked on a state visit to the island nation on Monday, marking a notable milestone in the bilateral relationship. The visit, scheduled from March 11 to 13, coincides with Mauritius' National Day celebrations, where President Murmu will be the Chief Guest.
The Ministry of External Affairs expressed the historic nature of the visit, highlighting President Murmu as the sixth Indian President to grace Mauritius' National Day as the Chief Guest since 2000. The occasion underscores the enduring and longstanding ties between the two nations.
As part of the celebrations on March 12, a contingent of the Indian Navy will join the festivities, including two ships from the Indian Navy's First Training Squadron, namely INS Tir and CGS Sarathi.
The visit holds special significance, as President Murmu and Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth are set to jointly inaugurate 14 India-assisted projects during their time together. This showcases the diverse and expansive nature of India's developmental partnership with Mauritius.
This visit follows closely on the heels of the joint inauguration by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Pravind Jugnauth of a new airstrip, jetty, and six community development projects in Agalega Island.
President Murmu's itinerary includes bilateral meetings with her Mauritian counterparts, President Prithvirajsing Roopun and Prime Minister Jugnauth. Additionally, she will engage with key Mauritian leaders, including the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
The visit will witness the exchange of crucial bilateral agreements, aiming to enhance institutional collaboration and capacity-building cooperation between India and Mauritius. President Murmu will also pay homage to Mauritian leaders at the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden and visit significant historical and cultural sites, including the Aapravasi Ghat, Intercontinental Slavery Museum, and the sacred Ganga Talao.
Moreover, she is scheduled to address Mauritian youth at the University of Mauritius, engage with socio-cultural organizations, and connect with the Indian diaspora and community at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute. The comprehensive agenda reflects the depth and breadth of the longstanding ties between the two nations.
