Hyundai Launches HND-14,'Carlino', a Sub-4 meter SUV

Mr.Koo was also recorded saying “The subcompact SUV is a very interesting concept. We are looking at it very closely. It will take another three-four years to hit the market; each market has its specialty. For China, it is Elantra-size vehicle, For Russia, it is the Verna. For India, a compact SUV is very apt.”

Most of the SUV’s core development will be handled by HMIL’s engineers, so as to develop the model with special focus on Indian customers. The sub-4m SUV was previewed as the Hyundai Carlino concept at the Auto Expo 2016.

Hyundai Carlino will be based on the same platform as the one that spawns the i20 hatchback, i20 Active crossover and Creta SUV. Additionally, the upcoming Hyundai sub- compact SUV will also share its engine options with the aforementioned cars.

So expect it to come powered by the i20 Active's 1.2-litre Kappa petrol and the Creta's 1.4-litre CRDi diesel. While the petrol unit puts out 82bhp along with 115Nm of maximum torque, the diesel offers 89bhp and a peak torque of 220Nm.

The upcoming Hyundai SUV is expected to go up against names like Ford EcoSport, Mahindra TUV300, and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza.  A rough estimate of the SUV’s price is believed to range from anything between Rupees 7.5 lakhs to 10 lakhs.
