Mahindra to Launch its New Compact SUV 'KUV100' in 2016

sdBENGALURU: After the success of the TUV 300, Mahindra is now planning to launch its S101/XUV 100 in early January next year. The reason behind naming the S101 as KUV100 is that the homegrown automaker aims to position the crossover as a completely different vehicle, according to oncars.in.

Though the company calls it a ‘compact SUV’, it looks more like a tall-boy hatchback with plastic cladding around the body. Upon its launch, the Mahindra S101 will take on the likes of Maruti WagonR, Maruti Celerio and the upcoming Tata Zica. Though there is no official word yet about its pricing, the entry-level variant of the S101 (XUV100) is likely to be priced below 4 lakh.

However, the XUV100 would be the right name for a small crossover this size. The new compact car will target hatchback customers. The vehicle will have a crossover-like stance with features such as plastic cladding around the body, rear spoiler, roof rails and high ground clearance. Other interesting elements are wide grille with vertical slats, projector head-lights, alloy wheels and Chevy Beat-inspired rear door handles.

The Mahindra S101 could be offered with two engine options—a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol and a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder diesel variant. While the former is an all-new engine, the latter one is the same that powers the TUV300. Transmission options might include a 5-speed manual and an automated manual transmission. The vehicle will come with two seating configurations- 3+3 and 3+2 layout. The gear lever is mounted on dashboard, which allows makers to create an extra space for a possible third occupant.
