3. Sahara Desert (North Africa)

Spread over 10 countries, Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world with an area of 9-200,000 square kilometers. The name is derived from the Arabic word for ‘desert’ – sahra. Almost 25 percent of the desert is covered with dunes and some of them are as high as 590 feet. The flora comprises around 2,800 species of vascular plants and around a quarter of these are endemic and when it comes to the fauna, the desert has monitor lizards, African wild dogs, Gazelles, crocodiles, camels, cheetahs, desert foxes, antelopes and more.
