Ashwin Becomes The Third Person To Take A Five-For And Score A Century

BENGALURU: Indian test cricket team led by Virat Kohli today recorded its biggest win outside the sub-continent after beating the West Indies team by an innings and 92 runs. Off-spinner R. Ashwin, who bagged a 7 wicket haul in the second innings with a century as well to his credit in the first innings, attributed the head coach Anil Kumble for his outstanding performance outside Asia.

Before the start of 4-match series, on July 19th, the head coach Anil Kumble did a Q/A session on micro-blogging website Twitter with his fans. He mentioned that bowlers have to play an important role on the tour. It now seems that Anil Kumble mentorship and his spin bowling experience was a big factor behind Ashwin’s magnificent all-round performance in Antigua Test.

Speaking to bcci.tv, Ashwin said: "I kept speaking to him (Kumble) about what I was doing right and what I wasn't. Obviously, he felt that my body was not going through as it was a little tired. He also told me to slow down a little at the crease. He gave me different ideas about what lines I can bowl to batsmen," he pointed out.

Only two people have taken a five-for and scored a century both at home and away. R. Ashwin is now the third person to join this elite club after Sir Garry Sobers and Ian Botham.

Further in his interview with bcci.tv he added that the Man of the Match award could have gone to Virat Kohli as well. The Indian ‘run machine’ Virat Kohli scored a double century during the match and received big applauds from the Cricket legend Vivian Richards.

“I think it was a magnificent hundred. To score a double hundred at Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground is a formidable task in terms of what he has achieved,” Vivian Richards told bcci.tv
