Woman Robot Astronaut 'Vyommitra' to Precede India's Gaganyaan Mission
India's humanoid robot astronaut Vyommitra is set to embark on an uncrewed space mission preceding the Gaganyaan mission, India's inaugural manned space flight with Indian astronauts. According to Union Minister Jitendra Singh, the Vyommitra Mission is slated for the third quarter of this year, while the manned Gaganyaan mission is planned for 2025. The name Vyommitra is a fusion of two Sanskrit words, 'vyoma' meaning space, and 'mitra' meaning friend.
Vyommitra, India's humanoid robot astronaut, is set to precede the Gaganyaan mission, the nation's inaugural manned space flight with Indian astronauts, according to Union Minister Jitendra Singh. The uncrewed Vyommitra Mission is scheduled for the third quarter of this year, while the manned Gaganyaan mission is planned for a 2025 launch. Designed to simulate human functions in the space environment, Vyommitra can monitor module parameters, issue alerts, execute life-support operations, operate panels, and respond to queries. 
The first test vehicle flight TV D1, qualifying the crew escape and parachute systems, was completed on October 21, 2023, in preparation for the Gaganyaan launch. The Chandrayaan-3 Mission, landing near the Moon's south pole on August 23, 2023, is progressing as expected, with vital information to be shared soon.
