When Will India Achieve Political Transparency?

Bangalore: India is one such country in the world that still lacks transparency when it comes to disclosing the funds and donations that the political parties receive.

According to a study conducted by the Stockholm-based International Institute of Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), Asian countries like India, Afghanistan, Armenia, East Timor, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Yemen are included in the list of countries which allows political parties and candidates to receive anonymous donations. Around 10 percent of the countries around the world permits anonymous donation, which includes India as well, reports Himanshi Dhawan for TNN.

The Indian parliament as against the Right to Information (RTI) Act still plans to pass amendments that will rule out political parties from the purview of the law. All this takes place in India at a time when most of the nations are heading towards increasing transparency. In recent times, the civil rights activists have come up against this issue, voicing out the need for transparency in political finance. But on the other hand, almost all the political parties have decided to avoid further debate.
