In a joint Congressional address, US President Donald Trump announced that reciprocal tariffs against China and India would be implemented from April 2, 2025. Trump reiterated that nations such as India charge 'huge tariffs' on American goods and termed the prevailing trade relationship unfair.
"India taxes us 100% tariffs the system is unfair to the US, it never was. Reciprocal tariffs begin on April 2. Whatever they tax us, we will tax them", Trump declared. He explained that non-monetary barriers that previously restricted US products would be reciprocated with similar restriction on foreign goods.
Trump pointed out that the US had suffered unfair tariffs from different nations for decades, including China, the European Union, and Brazil. Trump said that by introducing reciprocal tariffs, trillions of dollars would be generated and millions of jobs would be created, which is part of his dream to 'Make America Great Again'.
Planning to roll out the measure on April 1, Trump joked that he delayed it to avoid being accused of making an 'April Fool's' declaration.
"We've been taken advantage of for decades by every nation on the face of the earth, and we are not going to allow it to happen anymore", he asserted, repeating his intention to reconfigure global trade dynamics for American industries.
Trump also threatened that nations not producing goods in the US would be hit with steep tariffs, indicating a hard-line approach to trade policy in the future.
