Teen Shot for Advocating Education for Girls
Bangalore: There are those who have been scolded for not making an effort to go to school and doing better at studies. They should consider themselves fortunate. As a heinous crime has changed the definition of being extreme, the incident with Malala Yousafzai, 14 year old Pakistani girl who was shot for her admirable efforts of campaigning for girls’ education. She was shot in the head and neck by Taliban gunmen, for which the Taliban spokesperson took full responsibility. For him she represented a new chapter of obscenity which had to be ended.
Malala kept a journal over three and a half years ago, in January 2009, which has some alarming and bleak details. Written in Urdu it has records of how Taliban has imposed ban on all girls attending school. It also revealed how intimidated she was for being one of the girls attending school and advocating the cause. She saw the drop in number from 27 students to 11. Three of her friends were shifted to Lahore, Peshawar and Rawalpindi after the edict. And she was petrified about the idea of being killed for taking such drastic step, still she mustered her courage to attend school until was shot down while returning from school as per Firstpost.
In the aftermath will there be another Malala, who stood for the rights to education? Will there be a day when girls will be encouraged in a country that has terrorists living and controlling lives. The answer is anonymous. The need and desires for education is shared by many girls in countries impoverish or underdeveloped to provide them.
