Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams will be back on Earth on Tuesday night after an extended, unexpected stay on the International Space Station (ISS). The spacecraft that took Williams and three other astronauts to the ISS will undock from the space station and splash down off the coast of Florida at 5:57 p.m. US Eastern Time (3 a.m. Wednesday IST), NASA said.
Williams and Barry 'Butch' Wilmore originally returned 10 months ago after their eight-day mission but were delayed because of technical issues. Their flight back is under NASA's SpaceX Crew-9 mission, a collaborative project with SpaceX. The Dragon spacecraft will close its hatch at 11:15 p.m. US Eastern (8:45 a.m. Tuesday in India) before starting its descent. The return will be live-streamed by NASA.
SpaceX owner Elon Musk has recently hinted that Williams and Wilmore might have returned sooner, saying in a Fox News interview with former US President Donald Trump that the astronauts were "left up there for political reasons, which is not good".
Williams, who reached the age of 60 last September, is the second Indian-origin astronaut to gain worldwide fame, after Kalpana Chawla, who perished in the 2003 Columbia space shuttle disaster. Born in 1965, Williams was born to Gujarat-born Deepak Pandya and Slovenian-origin Ursuline Bonnie Pandya.
She first made a journey to the ISS on board the space shuttle Discovery in 2006. Throughout the years, Williams has spent well over 322 days in orbit and has completed several spacewalks, all earning her a place of world fame in contributing to the development of space. Her recent return is another accomplishment in her great career.
